royalton

The royalton hotel makes you want to have an affair. Though, I’ve heard it’s been "refined," and I wonder if they still have their vodka, champagne room. LA has Nick’s Martini Room with a "Vod Box," where they give you a fur coat and oversized Russian fur hat as you enter the freezer of a room to enjoy some vodka. I thought the whole point of vodka was that it was smooth, and you couldn’t really taste the alcohol, so I’m not sure I get the whole "let’s go sit in a fancy bar to try to see if we can taste…nothing." Still, I love the allure, love the idea that a freezer bar exists. I suppose there’s always infused vodka, which if you’re asking, is kissing cousins of the Jell-O shots you do in college. I’m off today, walking the streets of Manhattan alone, enjoying my last day in the city, and will do my best to drink a filthy martini.

  1. The one in New York has had quite the sexy revamp, and the restaurant is serviceable. Go at lunch, have a drink in the lounge, not at the bar, and order the burger with caramelized shallots.

  2. I never understood the whole "you can't taste the alcohol" bit about vodka. While I'm more of a bourbon girl myself, I can definitely taste the alcohol when vodka is in the mix. Thank god I can, or there would have been some even wilder college nights involving really strong screwdrivers.

  3. Oh the burger with the shallots, I have heard of this one–Kate's got the right idea! I hope you are having a wonderful time in NY and that I get to see you soon.

Congrats on all of your successes, professional and personal, and sending love to you and your family from the East Village.

    Love,
    K

  4. Enjoy! And I look forward to the Texas Book Festival and getting an autographed copy of Moose. (They released their author list online so I checked.)

  5. Vodka…ahh the lovely taste of burning! Or you can have different flavors, for a taste of flavored burning! =P

  6. I once had a wonderful night at the Royalton. One night in the city with a beautiful man whom I had known for 20 years, but I knew wouldn't last past New York. I got on a plane in the morning and met the man I would marry the very next week. I always associate the Royalton with the end of an era. I'm not the cheating kind, but everyone should have an affair at the Royalton. Thanks for the memory, Ms. Klein.

  7. While you were walking around Manhattan by yourself enjoying your last day in the city, I was walking around in Manhattan enjoying my first day. The night time is a little scarier.

  8. Yep, I love vodka for that exact reason. If you did not have the burn and the face flush, you would never know.

I envy you for having a little time away from the kids. I have been in Potty Training Boot Camp (yes, it DOES need to be capitalized) for the last four day. It's going well.

I'm going away this weekend and I CANNOT WAIT!

  10. I HAVE had an affair at the Royalton and yes, it was fabulous! The fireplace, champagne and caviar… the round tub… need I say more?

  11. Not to sound too much like an elitist arse, but you cannot refer to vodka and dry vermouth as a "Martini." A Martini is gin and vermouth exclusively.

I would love to have an affair at the Royalton. The bar sounds like the perfect anonymous partner for me, for the night.

  12. Royalton, not so much. We stayed there when we were in NYC in June.

Bad water pressure. Strange, huge showers with slate floors (ick).

But the strangest was the matches. They kept breaking, unfortunately right after being struck.

Which resulted in my hat catching on fire.

Oh. They also didn't give us our 4am wake up call and we literally ran out the door to catch a taxi to the airport.

A Relais & Chateaux puts a Morgans Hotel to shame any day of the week.
