hysteria

I saw the film Hysteria with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, and a minor role for our adored Rupert Everett. It’s billed as “A romantic comedy based on the truth of how Mortimer Granville devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science.” And I can see the blurb now: “Vibrating!” But, it’s really not a romantic comedy, nor is it vibrating. There’s an absence of tension. Not once do we wonder (or even root), “Now how will the lovers, who are so clearly meant to be, ever get together?” It really doesn’t feel anything like a romantic comedy, so don’t see it hoping for a satisfying chick by way of flick. Doesn’t happen. Overall, I would not recommend this film until it hits homes in DVD fashion. This trailer pretty much sums up the entirety of the film:
