Is it just me, or does my son look like Mr. Magoo?  I’m thinking he’s got a nickname, now.  How’s my little Magoo?  I sing to them, the same song each time, every day.  Of course it’s a Carly Simon song, and if they don’t like it, they better hurry it up and get strong enough to punch me out, or at least drown me out with their cries.

I love lilacs and avocados
Ukuleles and fireworks
And Woody Allen and walking in the snow
But you’ve got to know that

You’re the love of my life
You are the love of my life
You are the love of my life
You are the love of my life
From the moment I first saw you
The second that you were born
I knew that you were the love of my life
Quite simply the love of my life

I love Lucy and pumpernickel bread
The Statue Of Liberty and standing ovations
And falling into bed
But get it through your head that

You’re the love of my life…

I change the words, creating my own now and then, changing the lyrics up to include "Magoo" and something to do with milk and my boobs.  But the message is the same, I love them, so sweetly, and I was lucky enough to bond with them before I even touched them.  As soon as my doctor pulled them from my body, and I was able to tell their father, he had a son and daughter, I cried right there.  I was in love from the second I first saw them.  And I know that doesn’t happen with everyone, but I do, even if one of them does look like Mr. Magoo.

  1. Wait until each birthday comes around. Mine are 16 and 14 now and I just know that when they turn 35 or so I'll be like "Today's my son's birthday."
A mother's love never dies – you just have to put it a way a little as they reach those horrible teen years. Happy New Year!

  2. I love that song. My son is 11 and since he was 2 I've said I'm going to dance with him at his wedding to that song! Your Magoo is beautiful! And his sister too. I checked out the pics, you can really see how they are getting bigger… filling out. Best wishes for a wonderful New Year with your growing family!

  3. My now 4 year old was a 30 week preemie (2 lbs, 13 oz) with eyes that went in different directions, so I called her "Kooky". It's still her favorite nickname even though her eyes have long since straightened!

You would never know she was a preemie now, she is completely caught up and beautiful!

Mazel Tov on your beautiful twins!!!
    Happy New Year!!

  4. The one thing i was ever good at it turns out, was loving my children. you can tell how much you love your babies. try not to worry too much. we humans have been having kids forever and it almost always turns out ok. Trust yourself. Enjoy them as much as you can for as long as you can.

p.s. the sex tape thing is just weird. im a guy and i would NEVER want to see me in the act or think that others could view it on some porn site.

  5. I sang "Hush Little Baby" to my son every day before nap and bedtime, so I assumed that baby #2 who heard this song EVERY day while in the womb would find it comforting when she came out. The first thing I did when they handed her to me after birth was to start singing that song. She began to scream like a banshee. Even at 4 yrs, she still hates that song.

I'm loving the red hair on both of them. Soooo cute!!!

  6. Grin….and soon Abigail will say…mama, how come you GAVE Lucas a nickname, and I had to get mine from HIM!? I hate that he calls me…(insert annoying nickname here)
Oh Stephanie, you and Philip hold on tight…this is the ride of your lives!

  7. Loved you on 20/20! You're so cute, and someone commented about your LI accent, but I swear I don't hear a trace of it, even though I expected it.

I have a godawful singing voice, but I loved singing to my daughter when she was a baby. I'd happily yowl along with her lullaby tapes. One evening, when she was about 2, she gazed up at me and said "Mommy, please stop singing." Warm memories.

The babies are definitely filling out like crazy and starting to look much pinker. Soon they'll have tubby legs and fat little toes.

  8. It looks like they are doing really, really well in the NICU. Filling out and with the feeding tubes in their mouths, even. It won't be long at all before they're home!

  9. Your message today brought back such a rush of memory, it took my breath away. With each one of my babies, that feeling of absolute, total, awe inspiring, lie down in front of any danger to keep them safe, swept over me sometime within the first few bits of life.

What is it my grandma said? Something like when you have children, it's as if your heart is no longer yours – it's outside of your body, vulnerable, visible, and totally theirs for the taking.

And I agree with Lisa above – having those bonding moments now certainly helps put all the lovely ridiculousness of teenagerdom into perspective.

Happy days ahead for you all.

  10. They are growing before our very eyes. Thanks for sharing your pictures. I look daily. You're doing an outstanding job Steph. Again, a happy & healthy new year to you and your beautiful family. And yes, the resemblance is uncanny.

PS…I missed 20/20. A tornado ripped through my town and I had no electricity for about 9 hours. One of my pastures looks like someone dropped a bomb on it. There must be about 75 to 100 trees all uprooted and laying down on the ground. Huge trees, ones I cant even get my arms around. I don't know how the cows missed death but they did. Even my little bull calf who was born on Christmas Eve was still there. Nature's force is an incredible thing. Looking at your pics takes my mind off of that miserable mess.

  11. Thank you for continuing to share! I am in love with your love for this new life and those babies. When I need a smile or a hug, I come to your blog to experience those feelings. Thanks Stephanie (and baby Magoo too; plus his sidekick!).

  12. He will hate it all his life, and then one day he will look back and say, "God, I love that. My mom is awesome."

    Or something to that effect.

Abigail will come into her own nickname soon enough.

  13. I've been reading your blog for awhile and haven't really felt the need to comment until now. I tivo-ed you on 20/20 the other night and I must say your pictures on your site do you no justice…you're absolutely gorgeous. I'm a 19 year old girl and I hope that one day I can be half the person you are. I admire your strength, courage, and confidence with all things. Good luck with your babies, they're precious! Happy New Year!

  14. Stephanie! I just finished reading the book and it was absolutely wonderful! I am currently going through a break-up and reading your story has really helped me these past couple of days. Thank you for being so honest and open about your past! I hope you and the babies are doing beautifully. Much love.

  15. My dad hugged me before I made him a grandpa for the first time. "Remember, no matter what your children look like, you will never know the difference."

Will Abigail carpool Mr. MaGoogle around during those (gulp) teen years? Or, will she impatiently designate herself driver of every Fisher-Price vehicle to soon bless your home?

    Stay tuned.

A HEALTHY, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU :)

  16. How funny! I call my preemie Mr. Magoo too. You would never know he was a preemie though. At 3 mos he weighs 14 lb. and is wearing 6 mos. He's a big ol' magoo! He also looked like a monchichi to me.

  17. One of my twins was known as Pinocchio in the newborn nursery. His nose made all the nurses giggle. I even remember having an awful thought cross my mind–"oh well, he can always have plastic surgery later in life!" Now that he is 11, he has a nice straight profile.

  18. I changed Whitney's "I"m Your Baby Tonight" to "Your my Baby" and James Taylor's "You are My Only One." I changed the words:"You've got two strong arms to hold me tight. A mom and a dad on your left and your right." I swear he would stop crying whenever I would sing those two songs in the car!

  19. And to anyone who knows Stephanie and Phil in person…please go get them a copy of the book "I'll love you forever" Thats the song I used to sing to my babies…and the book STILL makes me cry!

  20. Saw you on 20/20. You were so…cute! Being a woman I hate when anyone describes me that way, but you were. Happy New Year to you and the guppies and Phil!

  21. Those babies are absolutely exquisite…what a blessing. I always sang "You are my sunshine" softly to my daughter along with the lesser known second verse….
"The other night dear, as I lay sleeping,
    I dreamed I held you in my arms;
    When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken and I hung my head and I cried."

  22. OK! THis is the kind of post that seems like a Stephanie post! You are there! You are back! You are with your magoo and redhead! I'ts 2007 (and it took me four times to get that number right_ and yhour's is the first blog I wanted to check out and to siwh a happy new yhear too. and yes, I'm kwwping the buszzed btypos ehre beceause I can!

Happy New Year to the Klein-Beers!

  23. Stephanie,

Am blown away, have been away from your site for a while, only to return and find you with your beautiful babes, a little early, but doing great! If you want some great iron, check out your archives from a year ago and see what your priorities were then! My, how things can change in a year. You're in for a great ride. Mine are 11 (and a 13 year old older brother) and we had so much fun with them tonight bringing in the New Year, with Ryan Sechrest of course! Cheers and best of luck in 2007!

  24. Stephanie………Happy New YEAR!!!! U have to show your clip from 20/20 on Friday. I caught the last 30 minutes of the show and I was so pissed that I didn't see you! Please show it! Thx.

  25. Has anyone found online where we can see the 20/20 bit? I saw the part of the kid who made the video of himself and is now shut out of Wall Street (insert your wise-ass comment here) but I can't find Stephanie's bit..

  26. well, for that matter, i love james taylor's "your smiling face". it always makes me think of my daughter. it's the carly/james link.

  27. Hey Stephanie —
First off, congratulations. I've been reading you for about a year now, but never felt the need to comment, until now. This is a very special song between my mother and I. She sang it to me and it's in one of our favorite movies … I hope you, Phil and the babies are all doing well and I look forward to reading more about your adventures as a mom.

  28. I call my man Mr. Magoo – it just struck me as he can be absent minded and cute. To me it has come to reflect a loving endearing sentiment. Which is a wonderful nickname for the little baby. I love the name and have adapted it to include loving Jewish references like Magoo-Berger, to reflect our moods. It is wonderful and made me smile when I saw you had picked the same.

  29. When my son was born (c-section) I wondered if I would cry, b/c Im not a big cryer. It takes a lot to make me cry, unless it involves an animal, then Im a mess.
Without even realizing it, I was crying when they showed him to me.
    You just know.

And I always sang Bushel & Peck from Guys & Dolls to mine. He now sings it to me. :)

I love you a bushel and peck
A bushel and peck and a hug around the neck
A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap
A barrel and a heap and I'm talking in my sleep
    About you, about you

    Great pic.

  30. Heyyyy….Happy New Year!!! I know we are on the subject of babies….and thanks for the links to see updated pics of them….but…I think I speak for most of "us" (doting fans) when I ask to rewind to your wedding…we are waiting for the pictures from that event in you life as well…could you post those the same way? We're dyin ova here!!! (new york that is :)

  31. I wonder if you realize how much more interesting you are becoming as a person to read about since you've become devoted to the well being of others? This isn't meant to be a backhanded compliment. It's just the true and natural transformation of most women who become mothers, and it's so fascinating to see in you.

  32. Not to long after my daughter was born, I felt she looked like a little pumpkin and so I began calling her just that. Eleven years later, I am still calling her Pumpkin. I think you will find that years from now, you are still calling your son Magoo.

  33. awww he does look like mr. magoo, both babies look great and I'm sure they'll be home soon. Best wishes from Mexico, and hopefully someone will upload your 20/20 appearance on youtube …

  34. He is so Magoo like it makes my heart ache. How positively friggin adorable! Can we pressure you for an update on how your beans are doing, regarding growth and the like, pretty please?

  35. What beautiful babies. Looking at them reminds me so much of my second son. He was born at 23 weeks. So small… so fragile. He weighed in at 2 lbs 5 oz. It was the most scariest time and the most blessed part of my life so far.

    Jillian

  36. Oh finally! Another baby likened to Mr Magoo. I too was labeled as this as a baby, thirty one years ago. No better baby to share a cartoon character with than yours darling Stephanie. Congratulations.
