like I really needed a study to prove it?

A friend sent me the following article today from The Daily Mail:

Redheads ‘have more sex than blondes or brunettes’
Blondes may have more fun but redheads have more sex, according to new research in  Germany.  The study by Hamburg Sex Researcher Professor Dr Werner Habermehl looked at the sex lives of hundreds of German women and compared them with their hair colour.  He said: "The sex lives of women with red hair were clearly more active than those with other hair colour, with more partners and having sex more often than the average. The research shows that the fiery redhead certainly lives up to her reputation."  He added that women who dyed their hair red from another colour were signalling they were looking for a partner, and added: "Even women in a fixed relationship are letting their partners know they are unhappy if they dye their hair red. They are saying that they are looking for something better."  Psychologist Christine Baumanns said however that it may not be the women who were to blame for the better sex lives of redheads.  She said: "Red stands for passion and when a man sees a redhead he will think he is dealing with a woman who won’t mess around, and gets straight to the point when it comes to sex."

Ha!  Like I really needed a study to verify what a harlot I’ve been?  Actually, I don’t think I’ve been a harlot, but I have been quite direct and vocal when it comes to what I want, sex and otherwise.  Now, with my good luck, I’ll have two redheaded daughters, and I’ll spend the rest of my life in a constant state of panic.  Though somehow, I doubt it.  Now, as for women who dye their hair, I hardly think it’s to do with wanting more sex.  It’s a fun expression.  It covers grays.  But I doubt women do it to signal anything to their partners… see that’s quite an indirect approach to getting what you want.  I say, close your eyes tight and just go ahead and blurt out whatever it is that you’re not saying.  A visit to a salon is never the answer.  I don’t care what miracle the manicure produced for our beloved Reese in Legally Blonde.

  1. Men certainly assume redheads are more sexual. I can't tell you have many lascivious comments I've gotten from men with my hair as a starting point–comments I don't think any of my non-redhaired friends have gotten.

  2. Stephanie- Finished your book last night with tears of happiness in my eyes. You really have a gift for making me smile and cry with your stories – love the emotion. I have a question regarding your wardrobe in the book: what is a 'wife beater' top? You have to post a pic or something on your blog – I'm intrigued!

  3. My best friend is a redhead. I can't wait to send her this! Her husband claims he married her for her hair color. I guess I now know why. haha!

  4. Minired–I think, if I may speak for Stephanie, she was saying, "With her luck" she will get two redheaded daughters. I don't think she knows the sexes of her babies yet, or hasn't shared that info with us.

Now, this article is just about redheads in Germany. Do they make redheaded Germans? Hmmm… I'm half German, half-Irish, with a Claddaugh Tattoo to prove it, but no red hair.

I think I have to agree with the article though. We lamo brown-haired girls absolutely loathe sex.

    LOLOLOLOLOL!!

  5. The flip side to the good sex is this:

A recent study by anesthesiologists at the Outcomes Research Institute of the University of Louisville indicates that there really is something different about that redheaded stepchild after all.

According to Edwin B. Liem, M.D., people with natural red hair require more anesthesia than people with other hair types. The results of his recent study not only have implications for redheads who require surgery, but they may give researchers a better understanding of how anesthesia works in humans.

  6. I have always had an aesthetic appreciation for red hair; I just think that it is perfectly lovely. I have no desire to dye my own hair, though I admire the tresses of those redheads I know. Empirically, I have found that the character stereotypes don't generally hold. And I don't know anything about how redheads' sexuality differs from that of others with different hair colors. Physiologically, though, there has been some uniqueness found among redheads. I am thinking of a study done at McGill University, published last year and also well-publicized in the media, which looked at pain response among those with a melanocortin-1 receptor gene variant. The study examined mice with a genetic mutation and also human redheads, both of whom had the nonfunctional receptor. The results showed reduced sensitivity to noxious stimuli and increased analgesic responsiveness to a certain morphine metabolite. In other words, redheads were able to handle pain better than others. The article was in the Journal of Medical Genetics. Here is a link: http://jmg.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/42/7/583

  7. Funny thing is, I always wanted to be a red head until I had a crazy spontaneous urge to dye my own hair. Likely story…I left it on too long yada yada yada and my hair turned a red-orange, a not quite ripe tomato color. I died it back as soon as I humanly could (insuring my hair didnt fall out of its roots) I havent touched my hair since. Looks like I was just born to be a prude…

  8. When I had red hair, I had a lot of sex.

I was also single, and looking for it. So I don't think it was entirely the hair color. But as Suzie said, when I dyed it back to brown, people would always ask why I didn't keep it.

    Especially men.

  9. Hmmm…interesting. The study that Clive cites seems to show some different results than the one I mentioned. I checked, and found several published studies by this Dr. EB Liem that look at anesthesia requirements and pain tolerance thresholds among redheads compared to dark-haired people (actually, his study subjects were only women, whereas the McGill study looked at both men and women). All that we can conclude from the different studies is that the MC1R gene mutation is responsible for both a)red hair; and b)modulation of pain sensitivity. The question then becomes: Are redheads more or less sensitive to pain? Perhaps further, more extensive studies are required to answer that question adequately well.

  10. Amen to THAT. Let me be the first to chime in (so far) that it is AWESOME being a *natural* redhead…I don't think dying your hair counts, people.

  11. If blondes have more fun, and red heads have more sex, what do brunettes have?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    More dye jobs!!

  12. I dyed my hair red for a couple of years only due to the coaxing of my gay hairdresser. He said it would be "fab with my skin tone". I went along with it never thinking that it would entice the opposite sex. Boy did it ever! It was funny, because all of my girlfriends hated it and told me so, but all my guy friends and dates raved about it. When I show pictures of me with red hair to guys I meet now, they all say "wow, I like it red. Why don't you change it back?" Dying to be red was a LOT of upkeep that is eventually why I stopped doing it. But boy did I have a lot of fun the few years that I was!

  13. I recently went from blonde to red and I love it – I can't say that I really know what my natural color is … so now red it is.
I must admit that it DOES make me feel more sexy, sexual. But I was already one to ask for what I wanted .. I think I have just begun to discover my inner-redhead.

  14. Sorry, but a dye job DOES NOT make you a redhead. Unless you grew up with taunts of carrot top and people using the term redheaded stepchild and then awkwardly realizing who they just said that to, you are not a redhead. Part of that feisty-ness comes from the childhood torment.

  15. I finished your book last night and loved it! I have read your blog for almost two years and enjoy it. Yet I was also very captivated and intrigued by your writing and your "story". My husband stopped to skim it as he knew something in it was affecting me. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy all you have worked so hard to attain.

  16. I've always had anesthesia problems and I'm far too young to know about all this good sex yet…but hey, at least I have something to look forward to. I'll think of it as the Gods way of trying to say "We're sorry you burn if you walk to the mail box without sunscreen on"…haha.

  17. Congrats on everything Stephanie! I am a "true" redhead and have had 2 c-sections. Redheads also bleed more–my OB told me that prior to the surgery and she was right! Here's to hoping you'll deliver vaginally(can I say that?)….!

  18. …hello dear..-i had to smile about your posting today, because i am sitting in Hamburg/ Germany…thats were i live, and reading your blog..written in the USA…and plus my mum is a redhead, even she dyes her hair since i know her..LoL and thats almost 30 years..and her sister too…but i cannot agree with the stdy Dr Habermehl made but anyways…greetings from Hamburg
    Tatiana :o)

  19. Some people have taken to calling me the "Stephanie Klein of Seattle." Except for the little fact that I am a guy.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

  20. Reminds me (a natural born redhead) – of Erica Jong's book 'Fanny', where she writes this (translated from Danish, so forgive me if the words aren't 100% correct):
'This one is really hot' said Evelina
'The redhaired always are', said Kate 'Blondes are cold'….

    I don't know if it's true though!

  21. Oh, and Marion Roach has written a book: 'The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning, and Sexual Power of Red Hair' – haven't read it yet, but it's on my wish list…..
    It might be interesting!

  22. "If blondes have more fun, and red heads have more sex, what do brunettes have?"

    – Brunettes have more true love…

  23. funny how it only works for women. pink guys are yucky and i doubt they get much sex at all. i mean look at carrot top or that fugly guy from CSI.

  24. The thing about redheads is they're either really hot or really not. There is often not an in-between, from my personal observation. However, no one can dispute that that little red head girl was the one that always held Charlie Brown's heart.

  25. I`ve started dying my hair a few years ago because it started turning grey very early when I was only in my twenties. So I`m blonde now (or brunette undercover like I use to say) and I have not more or less fun than before. So I think that`s all clichè.

  26. Im a secret HOT sexy ginger nut (blonde to the outside world) but why do we have white eyebrows, does anyone know?

  27. I haven't been here in forever! I was sitting in the nail salon waiting (and waiting…) for my turn (which never came…) and I picked up July's issue of Elle (I think…) and who did I see (You!). I'm thinking, "She looks familiar!" Congrats on all of your success especially the twins!!!

  28. sigh. my boyfriend's ex-fiance was a true auburn redhead. great, makes me feel like i'll never compare and i don't want to know how oversexed she was! not fair..brunettes get the worst rap!
