The home photos seen here–well, the first was a home FOR RENT.  $2400 /month.  In Manhattan, that gets you a small one-bedroom.  In Austin, it gets you a four-bedroom, with a majestic view, and your own private mini golf.  The other "un-home" photos are of homes with which we didn’t end up moving forward (including a model home).  I love model homes; they give you so many decorating ideas (a wine rack in the bathroom for towels!).

  1. So did you get a tattoo? The last time I was in Austin was over ten years ago and I got a tattoo of a little turtle on my left butt cheek. It seemed like a good thing to do at the time.

  2. i love the way you love burgers. if i had a knack for photography, i would capture them the way you do. looks delicious.

have you started breaking in your cowgirl boots yet?

  3. That seared ahi looked so delicious! MMMmmm.

Cannot believe that house had a mini golf course. Hysterical. That outdoor fireplace was awesome though – love that!

  4. I loved the idea (and never really saw it before visiting Austin) of outdoor living spaces. We're talking full kitchens and living rooms (with furniture and TVs) outside, beneath a covered deck. Imagine a real living room but outside! Love it!

  5. Oh yes, definately have outdoor living spaces. Ours aren't that elaborate yet, but are working on them. A friend has a jacuzzi in one area that is surrounded with greenery and lanterns and a fireplace, and this is the Midwest we're talking. Yes, a lot of people here actually use jacuzzi's here, snow on the ground and all! However, that may be a bit too warm for Austin, but a pool is a must.

  6. Stephanie, did the rental come furnished or are those ones pictures of model homes? Isn't it amazing the difference of the value of your housing dollar depending on location?

Just wait until spring/early summer which is beautiful and perfect for the outdoor living areas. My friends and I would stop hitting the bars and restaurants by 50% at least because every night was perfect to sit in a backyard, make margaritas, fire up the grill, play cards and not even look at the clock. You can hear voices soaring over the fences from back yard to back yard – eating laughing, drinking, playing. And in the in between quiet moments you hear the buzz of insects, like locusts, which is actually a comforting sound all the while firefies dance in the yard….It's one of the things I miss most about Texas!
Hope your future holds many nights like that filled with friends and fun and comfort.

  8. I absouletly love your photos. You have an amazing eye. I could get lost looking in them all day. Thanks for posting them!

  9. i've had my picture taken with some pretty famous people, including two presidents. but i shrieked out loud when i saw my picture on your blog!

it was so nice meeting you and phil while you were here, and i'm sincerely hoping you move, hoping you join my tennis team, hoping i'll be one of the people who shows you how fantastic austin is.

for those who haven't met phil and stephanie, i met them briefly while they were in austin, and they're exactly who you think they are. open and honest and fun and so very clearly in love – beautiful people inside and out.

i look forward to seeing you both back here soon.

  10. I like the outdoor space for BBQs and stuff, but to be honest, we don't use all that much. Everyone is different, but after a while, the heat and bugs made it a little inconvenient. I still 'que, but I usually just bring the food in when it's done.

  11. You should come to sunny South Africa. All our houses in the suburbs are like that – indoor/outdoor living. Its lovely.
