betty & veronica

You’re either a Betty or a Veronica.

One of my favorite movies of all time is This Is My Life with Julie Kavner, Joy Behar, Carrie Fisher, Samantha Mathis, and Gaby Hoffmann.  I love it right down to the Carly Simon songs (My favorite being "You’re the Love of My Life.")  While babysitting the girls one night, Marita Geraghty (Nancy Taylor from Groundhog Day) teaches Gabby Hoffmann and Samantha Mathis a life lesson.  Veronica Lodge, a seexy to the hilt shlongaholic, always gets what she wants, and sweet blonde Betty Cooper, quite simply, always wants what Veronica has.  "But a Betty can grow up to be a Veronica."  It’s all about being comfortable in your own skin

… or if you’re less into print and more into the small screen, you’re more Mary Ann than Ginger, more Jo than Blair. Mary Ann worked the gingham and pigtail fantasy, a homespun beauty who knows a thing or two about the stuff that happens in haystacks.  Ginger is all hips and lips, and she goes down smooth with her whiskey voice.  Ginger wears garters, and sometimes she’ll opt for the boy shorts that I adore.  I know men prefer the low maintenance Polnacheks and Mary Anns of the world, the Hanes Her Way women, to the Warners who look like walking Breck commercials.  All the Bettys wish they had the grace and patience, the poise, to be Veronicas.  Betty always wanted what Veronica had.  Grass greener thing, I guess.  But all the boys want the chill, no make-up, wifebeater chicks who don’t bother trying.  Well, I am shite out of luck then… ’cause I’m all Ginger baby… and I’m so Veronica about that.

  1. Actually, not all Bettys wish they were Gingers.

I should know. It helps to be naturally pretty with a good body, smarts, a great loving man, a wonderful daughter, and a good job. While you're straightening your hair, waxing your pubes, and worrying about what color to wear, I'm playing with my family, enjoying my life, and dressing up for special evenings.

I won't spend my life worrying about grays, lines, and wrinkles. Just because we're not glam doesn't mean we don't use moisturizers and natural make up. I'll have a nice body because being active is part of my life, not just my exercise routine that gets junked when life gets busy. So really, being a Betty is quite rewarding.

  3. I posted this last night, from my nerd phone. Just after I sang "The Facts of Life" with Yasmin. Chris commented about Joe vs. Blair. That's when we got into it, rolled up sleeves and my protests. He says I'm both… that one needn't be one or the other… he prefers me no makeup, sweats, wifebeater. That's such a John Mayer song.

    I loved you
    Grey sweatpants
    No makeup
    So perfect

  5. I would have to say I am Ginger… after all, when I am in my no makeup and wife beater mode, I don't want to be SEEN.

I think men like to view it from afar, but when it comes down to the brass tacks of actually handling it, they just can't seem to get the job done.

  6. Cartoons:
    Betty over Veronica
    Betty Rubble over Wilma Flintstone
    Judy Jetson over Jane Jetson
Melody over the rest of the Pussycats

    TV:
Mary Ann over Ginger, hands down.
Blair over Jo (Jo was too butch)
    Chrissy over Janet
    Alice over Trixie
Charlotte over Carrie, Samantha, and Miranda

  7. I've only been reading for the past couple of months, and never commented before.

You don't seem to be Ginger. You seem too brainy, detail-oriented and self-sufficient at getting by in life to be a Ginger. Also, too open with your vulnerabilities and flaws. The Gingers I know are experts at hiding theirs. They are seductive and transparent and you touch them but only find air. I think you are too real to be Ginger.

I admire your ability (and will?) not to hide.

  8. Actually, if you read the comics, Veronica starts out with more than Betty– money, clothes– but she almost always loses in the end. Sure, Archie falls for Veronica, who's strutting her stuff while Betty's fixing his car and bringing him cookies– but then Veronica always throws a hissy fit and has to change outfits five billion times, or ditches Archie one too many times, or gets herself into something she knows nothing about…

Who wouldn't want to date someone who can cook and fix cars, wind-surf, raises money for charity, and is just plain kind?

The real question is why Betty and Veronica stay friends, when they're both ostensibly dating Archie at once…

  9. Anna,
I think they can remain friends while dating the same guy because the comic was created by a guy.

  10. Wait, this must be the second time you changed what you wrote in this post since i first read it this morning! Yankees suck…

  11. I agree with that, you can be both. Although I feel I'm more of a Joe, I can definitely pull a Blair out of my hat at any moment.

  12. I batted that question around for many years growing up until I realized the answer in adulthood was painfully simple: When it's too close to call, Ginger and Mary Ann at the same.

  13. More of a Betty then a Veronica…and proud of it. Cause Betty was a fox in her own right. (Lets ignore that I am not a blonde but a brunette and yet I still identify with Betty thankyouverymuch.) And…more of a Carrie then a Charlotte or anyone, just to let ya know:)

  14. Frankly speaking….Veronica just used Archie, used her seductive powers to get him to do her chores, had him wound around her little finger, made him feel insecure about himself and generally treated him like a rag while Betty seemed to genuinely care for the guy for what he really was. Is there really still a question why us men prefer the Betty's ?
